How Gabapentin is used?

Gabapentin is an anti-epileptic drug, also known an “Anticonvulsant”. It affects the nerves and chemicals in the body which are involved in the root of seizures and some other types of pain. It is usually taken with a full glass of warm water, with or without food, thrice a day.

  • Gabapentin should be taken at proposed time. No more than 12 hours should pass between your doses. You should follow the directions of usage printed on your prescription tag carefully.
  • Ask your doctor to explain any part you don’t understand. Take the medication exactly as directed. Don does not alter the dose of the drug as it can cause harm to you.
  • Be sure that you get only the type of gabapentin drug that is prescribed by your doctor. Ask your druggist if you’ve any questions regarding gabapentin you were given.
  • It is advised to swallow the pills whole; don’t cut, crush or chew them.
  • If a doctor tells you to take ½ of a regular tablet, split the tablet carefully along the score mark. And, use the other ½ portion as part of your next dose. Throw away any ½ tablets which you’ve not used them within several days of breaking them.

If you are using gabapentin for the control of Postherpetic Neuralgia or seizures, your consultant will probably recommend you a low dose and increase your dose slowly as needed to treat your condition. If you’re taking it for PHN, tell your doctor/health expert if your symptoms do not recover during your treatment.

Continue using this medication even if you feel well. Don’t stop taking it without talking to your doctor, even if you face side effects like unusual changes in mood and behavior. If you suddenly stop taking it (any form), you can experience withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, anxiety, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, sweating, and, pain. If you’re taking gabapentin for the treatment of seizures & you suddenly stop taking it, you may experience seizures more frequently. Ask your doctor to decrease your dose.

Read all the instruction and the information carefully before using this medication. Ask your doctor if you’ve any questions regarding the usage.
